Full job description

Microsoft Advertising's Billing Platform team seeks a Principal Software Engineering Manager to lead a team developing a large-scale platform managing advertiser financial lifecycle including invoicing, payments, budget management, revenue processing, financial reporting, and compliance. Responsibilities include technical leadership, platform modernization, architecture, and collaboration with cross-functional teams. Requires Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with 6+ years engineering experience coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, or equivalent. Preferred qualifications include Master's degree or extensive experience, leadership experience, and background in distributed systems, cloud services, and financial systems. Role is full-time, on-site in Redmond, WA. Salary range USD $142,800 - $274,800 annually, higher in SF Bay Area and NYC. Benefits available.

What you'll do

  • Lead and grow a high-performing engineering team through coaching, mentoring, hiring, and talent development
  • Define and execute the technical vision and roadmap for Microsoft's Advertising Billing Platform
  • Drive the design, architecture, and delivery of scalable services supporting billing, invoicing, payments, financial controls, and reporting
  • Establish a culture of engineering excellence focused on reliability, security, quality, and operational rigor
  • Partner with cross-functional leaders across Engineering, Product, Finance, and Operations to deliver business-critical capabilities
  • Leverage AI and automation to improve developer productivity, operational efficiency, and customer support experiences
  • Manage technical execution for complex multi-team initiatives while balancing short-term delivery with long-term platform investments
  • Foster an inclusive, collaborative environment that enables engineers to do their best work and grow their careers

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience
  • Preferred: Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree AND 12+ years experience OR equivalent experience
  • Proven experience leading and developing engineering teams
  • Solid background designing and operating large-scale distributed systems and cloud services
  • Demonstrated success driving architecture decisions and technical strategy across multiple teams
  • Experience with financial systems, billing, payments, commerce, accounting, or enterprise platforms is highly desirable
  • Exceptional collaboration, communication, and stakeholder management skills
  • Passion for building great teams, developing talent, and delivering customer-focused solutions
