Full job description

Microsoft Advertising is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to lead the architecture and development of its Billing Platform, a critical system managing advertiser financial lifecycle including billing, invoicing, payments, tax compliance, and financial reporting. The role involves driving platform modernization, cloud migration, and AI-powered operational improvements. Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with 6+ years of engineering experience coding in languages such as C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python. Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree or extensive experience (8-12+ years). Experience with large-scale distributed systems, financial systems, and architectural leadership is required. The position is full-time, on-site in Redmond, Washington, with a salary range of $142,800 to $274,800 annually in most U.S. locations, higher in SF Bay Area and NYC. What you'll do

  • Lead the architecture and evolution of Microsoft's Advertising Billing Platform
  • Design and build scalable services supporting billing, invoicing, payments, tax, revenue recognition, and financial reporting
  • Drive platform modernization, cloud migration, and architectural simplification
  • Establish engineering excellence standards for reliability, observability, security, and operational readiness
  • Partner with product, finance, and engineering teams to deliver new monetization models and global compliance requirements
  • Leverage AI and automation to improve diagnostics, incident response, developer productivity, and customer support experiences
  • Mentor senior engineers and influence technical strategy across the Platform organization

Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience
  • Preferred: Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree AND 12+ years experience OR equivalent experience
  • Proven experience building large-scale distributed systems and cloud services
  • Solid system design and architectural leadership skills
  • Experience with financial systems, payments, billing, accounting, commerce, or enterprise platforms is highly desirable
  • Track record of driving cross-organizational initiatives and leading through influence
  • Passion for engineering excellence, operational rigor, and customer impact
