Full job description
Microsoft is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to lead technical direction and development of the Bing Ads auction platform. The role involves owning critical components of the ad serving stack, improving scalability, performance, and reliability, and leading cross-team initiatives to integrate AI-powered capabilities. Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with 6+ years of engineering experience coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python. Preferred qualifications include a Master's degree or 12+ years experience, 5+ years owning production services, and experience with large-scale distributed systems and online advertising. Responsibilities include driving technical strategy, mentoring engineers, ensuring platform health, and collaborating with product, design, and applied science teams. The position is full-time, on-site in Redmond, WA or Mountain View, CA. Salary ranges from $142,800 to $274,800 annually, higher in SF Bay Area and NYC.

5+ years of experience owning and operating production services as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) or on-call owner
Proven technical design, problem-solving, and debugging skills with large, complex production systems
Ability to lead technical initiatives across teams and influence architectural decisions
