Microsoft is hiring a Principal Software Engineer to lead technical direction and development of the Bing Ads auction platform. The role involves owning critical components of the ads serving stack, improving scalability, performance, and reliability, and leading the evolution of the core auction and pricing engine. Responsibilities include driving high-impact technical initiatives, collaborating with cross-functional teams, setting architectural direction, advancing AI-enabled engineering practices, mentoring engineers, and ensuring operational excellence of a high-scale, low-latency platform. Candidates must have a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field with 6+ years of engineering experience coding in C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python, with preferred qualifications including a Master's degree or 12+ years experience. Experience owning production services, leading architecture, and working with large-scale distributed systems and online advertising is required. The position is full-time, on-site in Redmond, WA or Mountain View, CA. Salary ranges from $142,800 to $274,800 annually in most US locations, with higher ranges in the San Francisco Bay Area and New York City.

Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 6+ years technical engineering experience with coding in languages including C, C++, C#, Java, JavaScript, or Python OR equivalent experience
Preferred: Master's Degree in Computer Science or related technical field AND 8+ years technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree AND 12+ years experience
5+ years experience owning and operating production services as a Designated Responsible Individual (DRI) or on-call owner
Proven technical design, problem-solving, and debugging skills with experience on large, complex production systems
Proven ability to lead technical initiatives across teams, influence architectural decisions, and communicate effectively with engineering and cross-functional partners
Experience driving ambiguous, high-impact projects independently and delivering complex solutions with minimal direction
Experience designing, building, and operating large-scale distributed systems throughout the full software development lifecycle
Experience leading architecture and technical execution across multiple teams, influencing engineering strategy and driving technical alignment
Experience building shared platforms, frameworks, or developer productivity solutions
Experience with online advertising, search, or other high-scale, low-latency distributed systems
