Full job description

Microsoft Creative Brand & Advertising seeks a Principal Director to lead the Global Creative team, building an in-house creative capability focused on brand strategy, advertising, production, and storytelling. Responsibilities include defining creative vision, building and scaling the team, managing creative production across multiple channels, hiring and developing talent, managing agency relationships, integrating AI tools responsibly, and representing the team to senior leadership. Required qualifications include a relevant degree with 7+ years product/service design experience or equivalent, 5+ years people management, and a portfolio demonstrating impactful creative work. Preferred qualifications include 12+ years creative leadership experience, experience scaling creative organizations, executive communication skills, and familiarity with hybrid internal/external creative models. Salary ranges from $165,600 to $296,400 annually in most U.S. locations, higher in San Francisco Bay Area and New York City.

What you'll do

  • Define and champion the creative vision for the Global Creative team, setting standards for quality, craft, innovation, and cultural relevance
  • Build and scale the team from the ground up, establishing operating model, team structure, culture, ways of working, and quality benchmarks
  • Serve as the senior creative voice in brand and advertising decisions, ensuring work reflects Microsoft’s brand ambition and drives measurable business impact
  • Own end-to-end creative production across brand campaigns, advertising content, digital, social, video, and experiential touchpoints
  • Attract, hire, develop, and retain world-class creative talent including creative directors, art directors, and writers
  • Build a team culture of creative excellence, psychological safety, inclusion, and continuous growth
  • Invest in long-term development of team, creating clear career paths and coaching
  • Manage relationships with agency partners and external creative vendors, defining blend of in-house and external resources
  • Build accountability structures, creative KPIs, and processes balancing creative ambition with delivery efficiency
  • Champion responsible integration of AI-powered tools and workflows into creative production
  • Stay ahead of emerging creative technologies, platforms, and cultural trends
  • Represent the team at senior leadership level, communicating strategy, creative direction, and performance to executive stakeholders
  • Partner with VP, Brand & Global Advertising and peers to ensure creative coherence, resource alignment, and shared priorities

Requirements

  • Master's Degree in design, marketing, advertising, communications, or related field AND 7+ years experience working in product or service design
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in design, marketing, advertising, communications, or related field AND 9+ years experience working in product or service design
  • OR equivalent experience
  • 5+ years of people management experience
  • Portfolio demonstrating breakthrough creative work across brand advertising, content, and digital with clear evidence of range, craft, and impact at scale
