Full job description
Microsoft Ads Fraud Detection team seeks a Principal Applied Scientist to lead complex fraud detection challenges by designing anomaly detection approaches, building cross-signal correlation frameworks, and developing scalable ML models and low-latency pipelines. The role requires architecting end-to-end scalable solutions ensuring performance, resilience, and cost-efficiency. Responsibilities include leading fraud detection initiatives, developing production-scale ML solutions, translating scientific insights into production impact, applying advanced ML methods including anomaly detection and LLMs, collaborating across teams, and mentoring scientists. Required qualifications include a relevant degree with 3-6+ years experience, ability to pass Microsoft Cloud background check, and strong expertise in ML, fraud detection, and system design. Preferred qualifications include advanced degrees with extensive research and production ML experience, publications, and leadership skills. The position is full-time, on-site in Redmond, WA or Mountain View, CA. Salary ranges from $142,800 to $304,200 depending on location.

Requirements
Bachelor's Degree in Statistics, Econometrics, Computer Science, Electrical or Computer Engineering, or related field with 6+ years related experience
OR Master's Degree in related field with 4+ years related experience
OR Doctorate in related field with 3+ years related experience
Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements including Microsoft Cloud Background Check
Preferred: Master's Degree with 9+ years experience or Doctorate with 6+ years experience
5+ years experience creating publications (patents, libraries, peer-reviewed papers)
2+ years experience presenting at conferences or events as invited speaker
5+ years experience conducting research in academic or industry settings
3+ years experience developing and deploying live production systems
3+ years experience developing and deploying products or systems through product lifecycle
Extensive industry experience delivering ML solutions to production with technical leadership
Proven ability to architect scalable ML systems and low-latency decision pipelines
Deep expertise in statistical ML, anomaly detection, fraud and risk modeling, deep learning, large-scale data mining, causal inference
Strong software engineering and system design skills
Experience mentoring and developing scientists
Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
Research impact through publications, patents, or internal innovations in fraud detection or related ML domains
