Full job description

Microsoft’s Brand and Advertising organization seeks a Performance Copywriter for its in-house Creative team. The role involves writing short, high-volume copy across performance channels such as search, social, display, and motion placements, focusing on clarity, craft, and conversion. Responsibilities include producing copy variants, applying SEM best practices, collaborating with cross-functional teams, and using AI tools responsibly. Candidates should have 1+ year writing or content design experience with relevant education or equivalent experience, SEM copywriting skills, and understanding of creative testing and analytics. Preferred qualifications include 3+ years professional writing experience, 2+ years in performance advertising, and experience in fast-paced, in-house creative environments. Salary ranges from $102,100 to $202,200 annually in the US, with higher ranges in the San Francisco Bay and New York City areas.

What you'll do

  • Set and uphold a high bar for performance copy, driving clarity, craft, and conversion
  • Write and ship short-form copy across search, social, display, and motion placements, including headlines, CTAs, and body copy
  • Bring concepts to life with language, collaborating closely with writers, designers and motion partners to write for GIFs, animations, and short video formats
  • Produce high-volume copy variants quickly, then refine based on performance signals, creative testing, and platform learnings
  • Apply SEM best practices to search copy and landing-adjacent messaging, balancing relevance, intent, and persuasion
  • Partner with media, measurement, and channel teams to learn fast, improve outcomes, and scale what works
  • Translate briefs into clear copy directions and deliverables, working through efficient brief-to-output and review rhythms
  • Collaborate with cross-functional partners across creative, marketing, product marketing, and production to ensure messaging is accurate, compelling, and on strategy
  • Make solid recommendations and defend your copy choices with sound reasoning, especially in high-opinion creative rooms
  • Write inclusive copy by default, avoiding harmful language and representing diverse audiences with care and range
  • Use AI-powered tools responsibly to accelerate ideation, variation, and iteration while maintaining quality, accuracy, and brand voice
  • Stay current on emerging creative technologies and platform behaviors, bringing new ideas into the work and into how we work

Requirements

  • 1+ year(s) proven writing or content design experience AND a certification, degree, or training in English, Writing, Human-centered Design, Literature, or related field OR equivalent experience
  • Experience with SEM copywriting and search best practices
  • Demonstrated understanding of creative testing and measurement, and ability to adjust copy based on analytics and performance feedback
  • Solid collaboration skills with creatives, designers, marketers, and cross-functional partners
  • Preferred: 3+ years of professional writing experience in advertising, brand, marketing, or journalism
  • Preferred: 2+ years writing performance advertising for major platforms, with solid instincts for CTAs and short-form persuasion
  • Preferred: Comfort working in fast-paced, iterative environments with high-volume writing cycles
  • Preferred: Experience writing inside an in-house creative organization at a global technology or consumer brand
  • Preferred: Solid ability to write from visual inputs, creating excellent copy from a single image, video, or GIF concept
  • Preferred: Demonstrated ability to balance microcopy detail with bigger-picture brand and positioning considerations
  • Preferred: Experience operating as the primary writer within a multi-disciplinary pod or small cross-functional team
