The Trade Desk is seeking a Lead Senior Staff Software Engineer to own design, build, and delivery of the platform UI framework and core product features. The role requires technical leadership, project execution, and people management of a small engineering team. Responsibilities include reviewing code and architecture, driving technical direction, collaborating on roadmaps, defining KPIs, optimizing team efficiency, and fostering an inclusive culture. Candidates must have 13+ years software engineering experience, 1+ year managing people, proficiency in languages such as TypeScript, JavaScript, C#, Java, C, C++, Python, SQL, or Scala, and strong knowledge of SDLC, DevOps, cloud computing, software architecture, and frontend systems. Nice-to-have skills include full-stack development, frontend framework design, data visualization, distributed systems, microservices, Kubernetes, and AI/LLM integration. What you'll do
- Review designs, code, and architecture across the team's surface area
- Deliver technical and hands-on contributions to team objectives
- Understand strategic business priorities and communicate team alignment
- Drive technical direction for engineering teams building on the platform framework
- Collaborate with PM team to develop roadmap and MVP plans
- Develop execution plans including resources, milestones, and timelines
- Define and track business KPIs and user-facing metrics
- Analyze and optimize team efficiency, remove blockers, ensure quality shipping
- Establish and deliver on team commitments and communicate with leadership
- Measure and maintain quality of team's contributions including platform reliability and developer experience
- Manage a small team of engineers as technical leader and people manager
- Help team members develop career growth plans
- Give regular feedback and hold weekly 1:1 meetings
- Conduct annual reviews and make compensation recommendations
- Foster an inclusive and psychologically safe team culture
Requirements
- Solid understanding of SDLC, DevOps, and agile methodologies
- Solid understanding of cloud computing and trade-offs of large-scale distributed web applications
- Solid understanding of design patterns and software architecture, including frontend systems design and component-based architectures
- Experience contributing to the professional growth of software engineers and growing senior engineers and tech leads
- Experience providing technical and project leadership of initiatives involving multiple teams
- Experience leading and completing projects with high technical ambiguity
- Experience driving major, strategic, company-wide initiatives with significant risk
- Experience hiring and conducting interviews
- Proficiency in one or more programming languages: TypeScript/JavaScript, C#, Java, C, C++, Python, SQL, or Scala
- 13+ years of software development engineering experience
- 1+ years of experience directly managing people
- Bachelor's/Master's degree in computer science or relevant engineering field, or equivalent experience
- Nice-to-have: full-stack web development, frontend framework design, data visualization and table-heavy UI systems, distributed systems, microservices, Kubernetes, AI/LLM integration
