Director of Design Technology

What you'll do

• Shape and advance the UX design system focusing on scalability, consistency, and adoption
• Collaborate on token architecture, component governance, and versioning strategy
• Champion design-to-code pipelines to reduce friction between design and front-end development
• Maintain shared component library with high standards of craft
• Lead AI capabilities, innovation, and tooling strategy for AI-assisted design workflows
• Evaluate, pilot, and implement AI tools across design lifecycle
• Build and maintain AI tooling roadmap for prototyping, layout generation, and intelligent design systems
• Partner with engineering and data science teams to surface AI capabilities in UX
• Develop frameworks and playbooks for responsible AI use in design
• Automate repetitive design and documentation tasks
• Stay current with AI tooling landscape and recommend tools to leadership
• Act as liaison between Design, Engineering, and Product to ensure technical feasibility and design integrity
• Lead and mentor team of design technologists, prototypers, and front-end designers
• Align on shared APIs, component standards, and documentation with engineering leadership
• Evaluate design tool ecosystem and recommend tooling investments and migrations
• Build trust with senior leaders and serve as thought partner on design technology strategy
• Set and uphold technical quality standards for design deliverables and prototypes
• Develop best practices for high-fidelity and functional prototyping including AI-powered prototypes
• Drive workflow improvements to increase design team velocity and output quality
• Champion accessibility, responsive design, and multi-platform implementation standards
• Conduct design technology reviews and provide strategic guidance
• Establish and optimize scalable design technology processes
• Lead through rapid growth and evolving product demands
• Measure and communicate impact of design tooling and AI adoption
• Represent UX Design technology perspective in planning and roadmap discussions
• Represent company at industry events and design technology conferences
• Position company as leader in AI-enabled design practice
• Contribute to UX and design technology community, open-source tooling, and innovation

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in Design, Computer Science, Interaction Design, or related field (Master’s preferred)
• 10+ years of experience in design technology, design engineering, or related discipline
• 5+ years in leadership or management role overseeing design technology or design systems teams
• Deep expertise in Figma including variables, advanced components, Dev Mode, and Figma AI features
• Strong proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript
• Proven track record building and scaling design systems across large, complex enterprise or platform-based products
• Hands-on experience with AI tools in design context including generative UI, LLM-assisted workflows, AI-powered prototyping
• Strong executive presence with experience presenting to VP-level and senior leadership
• Exceptional communication and storytelling skills
• Experience leading multi-disciplinary teams across design technology, prototyping, and front-end design
• Deep understanding of systems thinking and scalable design infrastructure
• Ability to navigate ambiguity and drive clarity in complex environments
• Working knowledge of machine learning concepts as they apply to UX (preferred)
• Experience in adtech, martech, or enterprise SaaS with complex data-dense interfaces (preferred)
• Contributions to open-source design tooling or published design system documentation (preferred)
• Portfolio demonstrating design system leadership, AI tooling strategy, and measurable impact
