Microsoft is hiring a Data Scientist PhD Intern in the Commerce, Content, and Monetization (CCM) organization based in Redmond, Washington. The role involves working on large-scale recommendation systems, AI-powered experiences, and high-performance serving platforms. Responsibilities include owning scoped data science projects, analyzing large-scale data with SQL, Python, or R, designing and interpreting experiments, applying causal inference, statistical modeling, and machine learning methods, developing metrics and monitoring approaches, collaborating with cross-functional teams, communicating findings, and documenting reproducible work. Candidates must be currently pursuing a doctorate degree in a relevant field, enrolled full-time, and have at least one academic term remaining after the internship. Preferred qualifications include engineering experience with large data systems, proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Perl, or C#, experience with data analysis tools like Excel, R, MATLAB, AMPL, or SAS, familiarity with telemetry systems, A/B testing, and basic machine learning. The internship is full-time, on-site in Redmond, WA, with a monthly salary range of USD 6,810 to 13,480, varying by location. Own a scoped data science project from problem definition and metric selection through analysis, validation, and recommendation

Must have at least one additional quarter/semester of school remaining following the completion of the internship
Candidate must be enrolled in a full time bachelor's, masters, MBA, or PhD program in area relevant for the role during the academic term immediately before their internship
Some Engineering experience and/or project coursework using large data systems on SQL, Hadoop, etc.
Proficiency using one or more programming or scripting language to work with data such as Python, Perl, or C#
Some experience and/or project coursework performing data analysis and applying statistics working with tools such as Excel, R, MATLAB, AMPL, or SAS
Some experience and/or project coursework with product and service telemetry systems
Some A/B Testing or experimentation experience (can be from real life science experiments, hypothesis testing in stats, etc.) - not required but ideal
Some experience or coursework applying basic ML to a type of data and/or used algorithms to conduct experiments on data
