Full job description

GumGum seeks a Vice President, Legal to lead the global legal function, reporting to the CFO. The role involves advising executive leadership, managing commercial contracting, employment law, regulatory compliance, data privacy, and governance. Responsibilities include negotiating complex agreements, overseeing global employment compliance, managing outside counsel, supporting corporate finance, and leading a legal team. Requirements include a JD, active bar membership, 15+ years legal experience in technology/media/adtech, expertise in commercial contracts, employment law, data privacy regulations, and experience managing legal budgets. Salary range is $280,000 - $310,000 annually with benefits including 401(k) and potential bonuses.

What you'll do

  • Serve as primary legal advisor to CFO, CEO, and executive leadership team
  • Provide practical, business-focused counsel on commercial initiatives, operational decisions, and risk management
  • Attend Board meetings and coordinate governance matters with outside counsel
  • Oversee global commercial contracting function
  • Support legal execution of key commercial agreements including customer contracts, ad insertion orders, supply partner agreements, joint business plans, vendor agreements, licensing arrangements, technology partnerships, and strategic collaborations
  • Ensure contract structures balance commercial objectives with risk management
  • Serve as primary legal partner to People team on global employment matters
  • Advise on performance management, terminations, investigations, compensation programs, equity plans, employee relations issues, and workplace policies
  • Oversee global employment compliance across jurisdictions
  • Manage outside employment counsel strategically to control cost and ensure consistency
  • Provide legal guidance on data privacy and protection including GDPR, CCPA/CPRA, and other global regulations
  • Partner with Product, Engineering, and Security teams to ensure responsible and compliant use of data and AI technologies
  • Monitor regulatory developments in adtech, digital media, privacy, and AI and advise leadership on business impact
  • Coordinate Board governance activities, resolutions, and corporate records with outside counsel
  • Oversee selection, management, and budgeting of outside counsel globally
  • Support corporate finance and strategic initiatives with CFO and external advisors
  • Manage litigation, disputes, and regulatory inquiries globally
  • Develop strategies to mitigate exposure while protecting business relationships and reputation
  • Partner with Finance on insurance coverage and risk mitigation strategies
  • Lead and develop a small, high-performing legal team
  • Clarify role responsibilities and ensure efficient allocation of work across commercial, employment, and compliance matters
  • Foster a culture of accountability, responsiveness, and partnership with the business

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (JD) from an accredited law school
  • Active bar membership (California or New York preferred)
  • 15+ years of legal experience, including significant private or in-house experience with technology, media, or adtech companies
  • Strong background in commercial contracting and complex technology agreements
  • Meaningful experience advising on employment law matters across multiple jurisdictions
  • Experience supporting executive leadership teams
  • Familiarity with data privacy, cybersecurity, and regulatory compliance in digital advertising or related sectors
  • Experience managing outside counsel and legal budgets
  • Prior law firm training preferred
