Full job description

Smartly seeks a Senior Manager, Data Platform to lead Data Engineering and Data Analytics squads. Responsibilities include owning the data platform development, driving engineering excellence with automation, governance, and reliability, guiding data modelling, defining the platform roadmap, maintaining high data quality standards, and coaching teams. Requirements include strong experience in data engineering, warehousing, modelling, analytics, leadership of cross-functional teams, familiarity with BigQuery, dbt, orchestration frameworks, semantic layers, and observability tooling. What you'll do

  • Lead two squads: Data Engineering and Data Analytics under one shared vision
  • Own development and evolution of data platform including warehouses, pipelines, transformation layers, data models, semantic foundations, and reporting assets
  • Drive engineering excellence focusing on automation, governance, data contracts, lineage, observability, alerting, reliability, and scalable platform operations
  • Guide team on modelling to build enriched, reusable, trusted data assets and enable self-serve data capabilities
  • Define and prioritize data platform roadmap addressing support requests and operational pain points
  • Stay hands-on with data, modelling, and insight work to guide decisions and unblock teams
  • Establish and uphold high standards for data quality, validation, freshness, availability, and correctness with clear ownership and response protocols
  • Coach and grow teams in modelling, validation, testing, communication, and business understanding
  • Promote data-informed culture by replacing fragmented reporting with consistent, trusted, reusable data assets and live reporting

Requirements

  • Strong technical foundations in data engineering, data warehousing, data modelling, and analytics
  • Experience building or scaling a modern data platform in a product, SaaS, or similarly data-intensive environment
  • Ability to credibly lead discussions on data pipelines, warehouse design, modelling, reliability, governance, and real-time or near-real-time data flows
  • Track record of leading cross-functional or multidisciplinary teams spanning platform and analytics work
  • Strong product and business orientation with ability to translate ambiguous needs into scalable data solutions and clear priorities
  • Hands-on experience with modern data tooling and ways of working; familiarity with BigQuery, dbt, orchestration frameworks, semantic layers, and observability tooling
  • Strong communication skills to present data and insights to technical and non-technical audiences
  • Comfort working in ambiguous environments with evolving priorities and room to shape future state
  • Builder mindset, high ownership, pragmatic approach to creating structure while moving fast
  • Advanced education in a relevant field is a plus, or equivalent practical experience
  • Ability and willingness to work from Helsinki office three days a week
