Full job description

Merkle, a dentsu company, seeks a senior backend engineer with 7+ years experience in cloud-native, serverless architectures. Responsibilities include designing scalable AWS backend services using Lambda, API Gateway, SQS, SNS, EventBridge, and Step Functions; writing performant Lambda functions with cold-start mitigation and idempotency; architecting cloud infrastructure with IaC tools (AWS CDK, Terraform, CloudFormation); building secure RESTful and GraphQL APIs; owning CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions) with automated testing and security scanning; modeling relational (PostgreSQL, Aurora) and NoSQL (DynamoDB) databases; instrumenting serverless systems for observability; contributing in Scrum; and championing AI-assisted development tools. Required skills include expert TypeScript, JavaScript, Node.js (NestJS, Express, Fastify), deep AWS serverless experience, strong architectural decision-making, and high code quality standards. AWS certification and Kubernetes/EKS or Serverless Framework experience are pluses. The role offers hybrid work flexibility and is based in Belgrade, Serbia.

What you'll do

  • Design and implement scalable, event-driven backend services on AWS
  • Write performant Lambda functions with cold-start mitigation and idempotency patterns
  • Architect cloud infrastructure using IaC tools and own deployment end-to-end
  • Build and maintain secure, versioned RESTful and/or GraphQL APIs
  • Own and optimize CI/CD pipelines with automated testing and security scanning
  • Model and query relational and NoSQL databases effectively
  • Instrument serverless systems for observability and monitoring
  • Contribute in a Scrum environment by breaking down technical initiatives
  • Champion AI-assisted development tooling to improve team velocity

Requirements

  • 7+ years of professional backend engineering experience
  • Significant experience in cloud-native, serverless architectures
  • Expert-level TypeScript and modern JavaScript
  • Strong Node.js background with production experience in NestJS, Express, or Fastify
  • Deep hands-on AWS experience with serverless patterns
  • Ability to own architectural decisions and communicate clearly
  • High standards for code quality, test coverage, and peer review
  • Curiosity and proactive use of AI-assisted development tooling
  • AWS certification (Developer or Solutions Architect) is a plus
  • Experience with Kubernetes/EKS or Serverless Framework is a plus
