Lead Software Engineer (AI) - Onsite - Reston, VA - Freewheel

What you'll do

• Lead design and delivery of AI-enabled product capabilities including agentic workflows, intelligent automation, and decision support
• Create reusable AI patterns and scalable solutions across products and workflows
• Ensure AI features are reliable, useful, and maintainable in customer-facing products
• Design and deliver AI solutions meeting product and business requirements in cloud environments
• Understand AI capability integration across products to troubleshoot and improve outcomes
• Partner with product, data, and engineering teams to translate business problems into AI solutions
• Improve performance, responsiveness, cost, and scalability of AI-powered features
• Contribute to technical decisions shaping AI capability development and improvement
• Lead major technical initiatives and collaborate across teams for high-quality outcomes
• Mentor engineers on AI development, system design, and production-quality engineering practices
• Exercise independent judgment and discretion in significant matters
• Maintain regular, consistent, and punctual attendance with flexibility for nights and weekends
• Lead development and implementation of innovative software and web applications aligned with business objectives
• Integrate new systems with existing infrastructure focusing on scalability, security, and performance
• Mentor team members and provide technical training
• Collaborate with cross-functional teams to ensure successful application integration
• Participate in or lead peer programming, design sprints, or prototyping sessions
• Maintain comprehensive documentation for development activities
• Monitor application performance metrics and guide enhancements
• Provide expert technical advice and support to stakeholders and partners
• Collaborate with Quality Assurance to meet testing standards and technical requirements

Requirements

• 6+ years of experience in software engineering with a strong focus on AI/ML systems in production
• Strong programming skills in Python (Go a plus)
• Experience building and deploying Agents or LLM-based applications into production environments
• Experience with distributed systems and real-time inference architectures
• Knowledge of core AI domains such as NLP, recommendation systems, or time series modeling
• Experience with model lifecycle practices (evaluation, monitoring, retraining, and iteration)
• Experience with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, or GCP) and AI tooling ecosystems
• Ability to translate business problems into scalable AI solutions and drive implementation end-to-end
• Bachelor's Degree or equivalent combination of coursework and experience
• Ability to work nights and weekends, variable schedule(s) as necessary
