Full job description

StackAdapt is hiring a Director of Engineering to lead multiple teams building and scaling backend services for user data, integrations, and activation. The role involves owning technical strategy, mentoring engineering managers, overseeing distributed backend systems, and collaborating cross-functionally with Product, Data, and other teams. Candidates must have 15+ years software engineering experience with 8+ years in leadership, strong background in distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, APIs, and large-scale backend services. What you'll do

  • Own the vision, strategy, and roadmap for a large backend engineering organization aligning engineering investments with business and product goals
  • Lead, mentor, and grow multiple engineering managers and senior engineers
  • Drive technical decision-making and establish standards for architecture, scalability, reliability, and operational excellence
  • Develop future engineering leaders and support organizational growth
  • Oversee design and evolution of backend systems supporting user identity, integrations, activation, and data processing
  • Ensure systems support high-scale, low-latency, and highly available workloads
  • Partner with Infrastructure, SRE, Product, and Data teams to improve reliability, observability, and operational efficiency
  • Champion best practices in software development, distributed systems design, and engineering excellence
  • Work closely with Product, Revenue, Finance, Data Science, and Engineering teams to align technical priorities with business objectives
  • Build strong partnerships across the organization and represent engineering in strategic initiatives
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Translate strategic goals into actionable plans and measurable outcomes
  • Balance short-term delivery needs with long-term system health and scalability
  • Use metrics to evaluate reliability, team effectiveness, and delivery outcomes

Requirements

  • 15+ years of professional software engineering experience
  • 8+ years in engineering leadership roles
  • Proven experience leading multiple engineering teams through managers in a high-scale SaaS, infrastructure, or data-intensive environment
  • Strong technical background in distributed systems, cloud-native architectures, APIs, and large-scale backend services
  • Track record of developing engineering leaders and building high-performing teams
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills
  • Experience in AdTech, MarTech, identity platforms, data platforms, or real-time systems is a strong asset but not required
