Full job description

Taboola is seeking a Software Development Team Leader to manage a team of 4-6 engineers building the core data platform supporting reporting, billing, ML training, experimentation, and revenue optimization. The role requires 5+ years leading software teams, 8+ years engineering experience in Java or similar, expertise in distributed systems, Kafka, Spark, Linux, Kubernetes, SQL and NoSQL databases, and strong collaboration skills. Responsibilities include setting technical direction, ensuring production reliability, mentoring engineers, prioritizing stakeholder demands, driving cross-team alignment, introducing AI workflows, evolving the Spark SQL platform, and maintaining hands-on technical involvement. The position offers a hybrid work schedule based in Tel Aviv, Israel, with comprehensive benefits and location-specific perks.

What you'll do

  • Set technical direction for the team including architecture, roadmap, and emerging tech decisions
  • Own production health and reliability of the main data pipeline
  • Coach, mentor, run 1:1s, give feedback, and create conditions for senior engineers to excel
  • Prioritize demands from multiple stakeholders and manage trade-offs
  • Drive cross-team alignment with peer leaders and principal engineers
  • Introduce AI agent-based workflows to improve engineering velocity
  • Evolve Spark SQL platform and core framework code
  • Stay hands-on with technical decisions, design/code reviews, and unblock the team
  • Represent the team externally in design reviews, postmortems, hiring, and forums
  • Directly impact how billions of people discover the internet

Requirements

  • 5+ years leading and managing software development teams
  • 8+ years of engineering background in Java or an equivalent object-oriented language
  • Experience developing large-scale distributed systems and a solid understanding of production infrastructure
  • Deep grounding in CS fundamentals: object-oriented design, data structures, and concurrent/multi-threaded programming
  • Deep expertise in Kafka and Spark
  • Highly proficient with Linux and Kubernetes in production
  • Experience with both SQL and NoSQL systems
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate across teams and drive alignment
  • Strong problem-solving and critical-thinking skills
  • B.Sc. in Computer Science or equivalent experience
