Merkle, a dentsu company, seeks a hands-on Commerce Architect to design and oversee scalable e-commerce infrastructure on AWS. Responsibilities include designing cloud-native architecture using AWS services, integrating commerce platforms with third-party systems, ensuring high availability, security compliance (PCI-DSS, GDPR/CCPA), and performance during peak traffic. The role involves migrating from monolithic to Headless/Composable Commerce architecture and managing AWS budgets with FinOps practices. Requirements include 7+ years in software engineering with 3+ years in solution architecture, advanced AWS knowledge, experience with large-scale e-commerce platforms, microservices, API design, containerization, infrastructure as code, and database schema design. Nice to have skills include event-driven architecture, retail/logistics background, and frontend frameworks knowledge. Strong communication and leadership skills are essential. What you'll do
- Design and maintain cloud-native architecture on AWS for high-volume transaction processing
- Lead architectural design integrating commerce engine with third-party systems (ERPs, PIMs, OMS, Payment Gateways)
- Architect solutions for bursty traffic using auto-scaling, caching strategies, and CDNs
- Ensure architecture complies with PCI-DSS, GDPR/CCPA, and security best practices
- Drive migration from monolithic to Headless/Composable Commerce architecture
- Manage AWS budgets and implement FinOps best practices
Requirements
- 7+ years in software engineering, with at least 3+ years in Solution Architecture
- Advanced knowledge of AWS ecosystem
- AWS Certified Solutions Architect (Associate or Professional) preferred
- Experience building or maintaining large-scale e-commerce platforms
- Experience with Microservices and API design (REST/GraphQL)
- Strong understanding of Containerization (Docker/Kubernetes)
- Familiarity with Infrastructure as Code (Terraform or CloudFormation)
- Experience designing schemas for relational (RDS/Aurora) and NoSQL (DynamoDB) databases
- Experience with event-driven architecture (Kafka, EventBridge, SQS/SNS) - nice to have
- Background in retail, logistics, or supply chain technology - nice to have
- Experience with frontend frameworks (React/Next.js/Vue) - nice to have
- Ability to explain complex architectural decisions to non-technical stakeholders
- Leadership skills including mentoring and code/design reviews
- Ability to balance architecture quality with business deadlines and budget
