Full job description

StackAdapt is hiring a VP Legal, Commercial to lead and develop the commercial legal team, reporting to General Counsel. This senior role requires 10+ years of relevant legal experience, preferably with US and in-house experience in advertising, technology, ad tech, data, or media. Responsibilities include managing commercial transactions, building and scaling the legal function with automation and AI tools, negotiating agreements, and providing legal advice. The role is remote-first, open to candidates in Canada or the US, and involves occasional travel. Candidates must have an active legal license in Canada or the US.

What you'll do

  • Lead, mentor and develop the Legal commercial team
  • Build and scale the commercial legal function using automation and AI
  • Identify and implement automation and AI-enabled tooling for contracting
  • Optimize balance between strategic enterprise deals and automated workflows
  • Set long-term vision and oversee department hiring and development
  • Partner with executive and senior leadership on commercial strategy, risk tolerance and legal operations
  • Structure, negotiate and draft a wide range of commercial agreements
  • Provide legal advice to key stakeholders on commercial and legal matters
  • Provide thought leadership internally and externally
  • Provide leadership, mentorship and training to StackAdapt employees

Requirements

  • At least 10+ years’ relevant experience in an inhouse or reputable firm setting
  • US experience preferred
  • In house experience in advertising, technology, ad tech, data, or media company
  • Strong negotiation skills to manage commercial and legal risks in digital media/ad tech
  • Strong foundation in commercial transactions and understanding of IP issues and data licensing
  • Experience managing, mentoring and developing a team of lawyers
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with key stakeholders and business teams
  • Experience building or scaling a commercial legal function including process design, playbooks and templates
  • Appetite for adopting automation and AI tools in legal workflows
  • Ability to manage projects end-to-end with strong follow through
  • Excellent legal and business judgment balancing legal risks and business strategy
  • Exceptional writing skills and attention to detail
  • Desire to mentor and educate non-legal team members
  • Creativity and ability to work collaboratively in a remote setting
  • Call to the Bar in one or more Canadian Provinces or US states with active license to practice law
